Announcement: Volkskrant IISH Award 2012

Sign up for the the Volkskrant IISH History Thesis Award 2012.

For the third year the Dutch newspaper De Volkskrant and the International Institute of Social History are organizing the annual Volkskrant IISH History Thesis Award. See the previous award winners.

The prize is awarded to students who have written an outstanding MA-thesis on a historical subject. Students of studies other than history are also cordially invited to apply for this award.

Entry requirements

To be eligible to apply, the MA-theses should explore a national or international historical subject and be written between1 August 2011 and 17 September 2012, the thesis needs to be reviewed by a Dutch university. The thesis may be written in Dutch or English. During the assessment procedure the jury will pay attention to theses that have a clear innovative approach. This could be a new topic or an original approach to an existing topic.


The IISH has a cash prize of € 1500 available for the winning thesis. The best thesis will be announced in De Volkskrant, on the website of Kennislink and on the website of the Institute.

How to apply

The thesis should be submitted digitally and as (2) paper copies accompanied by a short recommendation by the thesis supervisor. The deadline for applications is 17 September  2012.

In November a shortlist of 3 nominees will be made known. On 6 December 2012, the winner of the Volkskrant IISH History Thesis Award 2012 will receive the award.
