IISH researcher Elise van Nederveen Meerkerk has been awarded a € 800.000,- grant by the Netherlands Organization for Scientific Research (NWO).
This research, entitled Industriousness in an imperial economy: Interactions of households’ work patterns, time allocation and consumption in the Netherlands and the Netherlands-Indies, 1815-1940 will analyze the development of family labour in the Netherlands and the Netherlands- Indies in the period 1815-1940. In this era the division of work between men, women and children changed notably, both in the Netherlands and the Netherlands-Indies. This research will show to what extent these developments diverged, and which influence colonial connections had on these changes in both regions.
