Profile
Ph D. at the École des Hautes Études en Sciences Sociales de Paris; Master's Degree at the University of Paris I (Panthéon Sorbonne). Professor of History at the Universidad Mayor de San Andrés (La Paz) and at the Post Graduate School in Social Sciences of CIDES-La Paz. Director of the Historical Archive of the department and city of La Paz until 2010. She served for five years as director of the journal T'inkazos at the Program for Strategic Research (Programa de Investigaciones Estratégicas -PIEB- in Bolivia).
Currently, she is in charge of the IISH Latin America Desk.
I begin my research work defending the argument that the indigenous world should not just be associated with the faraway, rural, community space, or the time of the conquest, a perspective that prevailed at that time. The role of indigenous people in the cities in more contemporary periods was and are vital. I focused also on the dynamics of inclusion and exclusion of the indigenous population in their relationship with the state, and the complex social fabric that broke the indian / non-indian dichotomies and framed a much more intricate social formation where class, gender and ethnicity were interwoven.
I believe that in my professional career, the path I have taken was guided by the drive to move on from in-depth case studies in rural and urban areas and focus on the relationships between them in broader, determinant contexts that help to understand the issues analysed but also to shape power itself, in its different levels and faces. Thus, two of my most recent research themes, written at different times, address the links between scenarios from the local to the global and vice-versa. The first one, about forced labour by indigenous people in colonial Potosí on the eve of the collapse of the Spanish Empire (mita), linking spaces and actors in Italy, Spain and the Americas. The second one, is a social reading of state budgets and the disputes about taxes between different actors.
In the arena of archives, I worked defending the idea that archive work is not just a technical activity, that the concepts about archives have been changing over time and that archives in Bolivia were the Archives of Power, because most of the records they hold and preserve are related to the powers of state. It was therefore necessary to introduce a policy that aimed to enable the archives to become the Archives of Society also, creating collections and acquiring documentary resources. Because the Archives were a space used by small groups of researchers, I also identified the need to change them by expanding their coverage and to make them more accessible and easier to use.
