The Art of Preventive Health and Safety in Europe

23 March 2015 - 13:48

Alfredo Menéndez-Navarro, Professor of the History of Science at Granada University, is the author of a richly illustrated publication presenting historical posters from various European Countries.

They show how graphic design has been used to promote health and safety prevention. Health and safety messages and slogans have evolved, from initially blaming individual workers for accidents and mistakes towards the fostering of a more proactive approach to prevention.

The majority of the posters shown originate from the collections of the Institute. The publication stems from the exhibition The Art of Preventive Health and Safety in Europe, which is on permanent display in the headquarters of the European Trade Union Institute '(ETUI) in Brussels. Acccording to ETUI's Director, 'Without the IISH collections and the extraordinary archive work entailed, this exhibition would not have come to fruition.
