Patricia Herbert Collection on Burma

03 July 2018 - 15:18

Early 2018 IISH received a small collection on Burma from Patricia Herbert (London, 1943).

Herbert studied at the School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS), lived a number of years in Burma in the early seventies and was for many years (1975-1998) curator at the British Library for the South East Asia Collections.

This collection of Herbert consists of four parts.

  • The first part is correspondence with several Burmese personalities, a.o. U Ne Win (1910/11-2002) (premier 1958-1960, president 1962-1981).
  • Parts two and three concern U Maung Maung, the ‘Brigadier” (1920-2009)  and U Maung Maung (1925-1994), the president for one month. There’s correspondence with both (and in case of the second Maung Maung also with his widow), and there are different typescripts.
  • Part 4 contains some materials from the 1988 uprising of which we already had a collection present at the Institute (and which also came by the hand of Patricia Herbert)

See the illustrations with this article for some examples.

IISH has yet another collection with typoscripts of  Maung Maung. This collection is still closed though

With thanks to Bouwe Hijma on whose presentation during the last 'Friends of the IISH' day this text is based.
