The Dutch colonies have published newspapers since the 18th century. A fine example is the Surinaamsche Nieuwsvertelder [The Surinam News Reporter] from Paramaribo, Surinam. This paper mainly reports on the arrivals and departures of ships, on slave trade, wars, and natural disasters. The issue of May 17, 1792, announces the arrival of the ship "De Standvastigheid" [The Steadfastness] carrying 200 slaves from Elmina (in present-day Ghana).
