In 1878, Abdul Hamid II (1842-1918), 34th Sultan of the Ottoman Emprire, suspended the Constitution and restored autocratic power to himself. In July 1908, Turkish army officers, adherents of the revolutionary Young-Turk movement, marched to Constantinople, planning to commit a coup d'état. Their aim was to restore the constitution, introduce democracy and modernize the |Turkish empire. Abdul Hamid capitulated immediately on 24 Juli 1908.
