In the fermenting shed of a tobacco company on Sumatra's East coast, overseer mr. Lühmann was attacked and severely wounded by one of the coolies. Labour unrest and the amount of murder attacks on European  managers by coolies grew rapidly in the first decades of the 20th century. In the Dutch East Indies, 209 attacks of that sort occurred in 1901.
