The leftist feminist writer Alaide Foppa (born 1914) frequently denounced the Guatemalan government for human rights violations. Both her sons had been killed as guerilla fighters in Guatemala. Foppa lived in exile in Mexico, but inopportunely decided to visit her mother in Guatemala City.
On 19 December 1980, she went out to buy flowers and she was kidnapped with her driver. What happened to her, is still unknown. Alaide Foppa was never seen again.
