The IISH has a rich collection of archival records, documentation, photographs, audio-visual materials and campaign materials including posters, stickers and buttons, all relating to Nelson Mandela. Use the IISH catalogue to search for ‘mandela’, adding additional search terms if required.
The collection was considerably enlarged by the acquisition in 2008 of the historical collection of the Netherlands Institute for Southern Africa, including the archives and documentation of the Dutch Anti-Apartheid Movement (AABN), the Holland Commitee on Southern Africa (KZA) and other former solidarity organisations. At the bottom of this page is a link to a downloadable pdf file (121 KB) with a list of video's en video-items about Nelson Mandela. The Solomon Mahlangu Freedom College (SOMAFCO) was the ANC school in Tanzania were exiled students from South Africa were taught by teachers from, among other countries, the Netherlands. Dutch ‘Welcome Mandela’ banner from February 1990, now in the IISH collection (call number: IISH BG R1-140). The banner was carried in a festive march in Amsterdam on the day of Mandela’s release, and later hung on the façade of the Amsterdam Municipal Theatre during Mandela’s first visit to the Netherlands in June 1990.
